New food allergens regulations for childcare providers
From 13 December 2014 early education and childcare providers were required to provide allergen information on the foods they provide.
Food allergens pose a significant risk to consumers with allergic conditions, which may even be life threatening. Children are particularly vulnerable because of their reduced level of control over the foods they eat. As a childcare provider you will be aware of children with allergies.
Food safety is very important for childcare, because children are a vulnerable group. This means children can be more seriously affected by food poisoning than some other groups of people.
As a childcare provider, it is our responsibility to ensure that you, the parents have the allergen information listed for the food provided during your child’s time with us. This information documents the allergens contained. The provision of allergen information concerns any foods bought from a shop pre-packed and non-pre-packed foods including home-cooked meals that are served at Little Rascals. This allergen information is available from the settings notice board and available by email.
What allergens need to be declared?
There are 14 allergens currently listed under food law that the setting must declare. These are:
cereals containing gluten, eg wheat (including spelt and khorasan), rye, barley and oats and their hybridised strains
• crustaceans, eg prawns, crab and lobster
• eggs
• fish
• peanuts
• soybeans
• milk
• nuts, eg almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecan nuts, Brazil nuts, pistachio, cashew, macadamia nuts or Queensland nuts
• celery (including celeriac)
• mustard
• sesame
• sulphur dioxide/sulphites (preservatives used in some foods and drinks) at levels above 10mg per kg or per litre
• lupin
• molluscs, eg clams, mussels, whelks oysters, snails and squid
The menu listed above has been compiled with consideration to the key allergen associated ingredients. Where the setting is aware of a child’s pre-existing allergen then alternative meals will be provided. Please inform the setting of any new known allergens that your child may suffer from.
