Sustainability

We are committed to embedding sustainability into our daily practice, environment, and ethos.

In line with the EYFS framework, we aim to provide children with opportunities to explore, respect, and care for the natural world, while developing lifelong values that promote environmental responsibility.

Rascals Aim:

  • To create an environment where sustainable practices are modelled and embedded into everyday routines.

  • To encourage children to develop an awareness of their role in caring for the world around them.

  • To support children in understanding the interdependence of people, living things, and the environment.

  • To involve families, staff, and the wider community in promoting sustainable approaches.

We link to the EYFS curriculum with:

  • Understanding the World: Providing opportunities for children to explore and respect the natural environment and to understand how people’s actions impact the world.

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development: Encouraging responsibility, empathy, and collaboration through shared sustainable practices.

  • Communication & Language / Literacy: Using stories, songs, and discussions to foster curiosity and understanding of environmental issues.

  • Expressive Arts & Design: Reusing and repurposing materials for creative activities.

  • Mathematics: Encouraging counting, sorting, and measuring during recycling, gardening, and water-saving activities.

  • Physical Development: Promoting active outdoor play while respecting and caring for natural spaces.

We:

  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle materials wherever possible.

  • Use natural, open-ended resources to support play and learning.

  • Grow plants, fruit, and vegetables with children to encourage healthy living and respect for nature.

  • Save energy and water by modelling good practices.

  • Provide opportunities for children to care for living things (e.g., plants, minibeasts).

  • Use eco-friendly and non-toxic cleaning and art supplies where possible.

  • Embed sustainability themes into planning, continuous provision, and learning journeys.

We love involving families and the community by:

  • Encouraging families to share sustainable practices at home (e.g. recycling, gardening, walking instead of driving).

  • Organising events such as eco-days, swap shops, or litter picks.

  • Sharing ideas, resources, and information through newsletters and displays.

  • Considering all children's voices when shaping and evolving our sustainable practices.
